Invest in Gems for a Sparkling Future

Some discerning buyers love to indulge in a little diamond retail therapy (“The Taylor-Burton diamond? Of course darling!”) But there is more to the world of precious gems than diamonds alone. Sensible investment and a prudent eye for quality can help buyers from every budget to plan a little for the future. The most important elements to consider when buying any precious stones are certainly the four c’s – cut, clarity, carat and colour.

Diamonds
They may well be forever, and that’s certainly true of the investment potential of diamonds. Market values for good quality diamonds rarely fluctuate negatively.

Emeralds
Large emeralds free from inclusions are rarer than diamonds. An inclusion-free emerald can sell for more than its comparative weight in diamonds. Most emeralds on today’s market contain inclusions; in fact, inclusion-free stones of any size are viewed with intense scepticism. Emeralds hold their value well, but if in doubt, opt for larger stones despite inclusions.

Sapphires
Since Kate Middelton slipped that 18-carat sapphire onto her finger, the popularity of sapphire encrusted engagement rings has seen a healthy boost. Although high quality sapphires are rarer than comparative diamonds, the popularity of sapphires tends to wax and wane a little, causing their value to oscillate with trends.

Rubies
Top quality natural rubies are a true rarity. It’s estimated that somewhere in the region of 80-90% of the rubies flowing through the jewellery industry today are artificially enhanced. Enhanced gems are not frowned upon, however certification must show process evidence.
